How we put the plan together
From Bystrá most destinations are within ten minutes by car: the gondola at Krupová, Trangoška below Ďumbier, Tále, Mýto and Bystrianska Cave. The Hotel Bystrá water world is across the road from Bosorka Apartments. Further away are Čierny Balog with its little train, Brusno and Banská Bystrica; keep those for whole days or for the journey home.
Each day has a main destination, an optional extra and a swap for when it rains. When planning, keep three things in mind:
- Monday. The caves of the Slovak Caves Administration, including Bystrianska, are closed, and so are the Central Slovak Museum, the gallery and the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica. Open are the wellness, Caracalla Spa in Brusno and the Thurzo-Fugger experience exhibition. For Monday, choose mountains or water.
- Season. The Chopok gondolas run in summer daily from 16 June to 30 September, and from 1 May to 15 June and in autumn at weekends only, 8:30 to 15:00 (the exact autumn days are published on jasna.sk). Bystrianska Cave is open from 2 January to 31 October. The Čierny Hron Forest Railway ran in 2026 until 15 September, and the Tarzania rope park is open from May to September.
- Arrival and departure. You arrive at the apartments from 15:00 and leave by 10:00. The first day is therefore only an afternoon, and the last only a morning or a stop on the way home.
You will find more about summer with us on the Summer below Chopok page, and about winter on the Skiing Chopok South page.
Chopok South for a weekend in summer
Day 1: arrival and water
- Main goal: after arrival, the Hotel Bystrá water and sauna world across the road, open until 21:30. Capacity is limited, and the hotel recommends announcing your visit in advance.
- Optional: from June to August the last tour of Bystrianska Cave is at 16:00, so you can fit it in even after arrival.
- If it rains: nothing needs to change.
Day 2: Chopok by gondola from Krupová
- Main goal: two cabins via Kosodrevina up Chopok (2,024 m). By the upper station there is the Panoramic Trail with a swing, and fit walkers continue along the ridge towards Ďumbier. Take a jacket for everyone; it is much colder up there.
- Optional: from Kosodrevina on foot along the blue trail to M. R. Štefánik Chalet and down the green trail to Trangoška, according to Jasná 9 km and 2 hours 40 minutes. If you are returning by gondola, watch the time of the last ride.
- If it rains: skip Chopok. Go to Bystrianska Cave or for a whole day to Banská Bystrica, unless it is Monday.
Day 3: the cave and the journey home
- Main goal: in the morning Bystrianska Cave. The tour takes 45 minutes and it is around 6 °C inside. It cannot be booked, and a tour runs with at least 4 people.
- Optional: the Tarzania rope park in Tále (May to September) or golf. If you are driving home west via Banská Bystrica, stop at the square and the Town Castle.
- If it rains: Caracalla Spa in Brusno lies right on the road to Banská Bystrica.
Chopok South for 5 days in summer
The first two days stay the same. You add a mountain day, a day with the little train and, to finish, the town.
Day 3: Ďumbier from Trangoška
- Main goal: Ďumbier (2,043 m), the highest peak of the Low Tatras. From the Trangoška car park on the green trail to M. R. Štefánik Chalet (2 hours by the signpost) and on the red trail to the summit, about 3 hours 20 minutes up in total. The chalet is open all year and takes cash only.
- Optional: with children, the climb to the chalet and back is enough.
- If it rains: do not go onto the ridge; in summer there are thunderstorms there, mainly in the afternoon. The alternatives are Bystrianska Cave and wellness.
According to the NAPANT administration, the winter route from the chalet straight to the summit is closed whenever there is not at least 15 cm of continuous snow. Without snow you go up Ďumbier on the red trail via Krúpove sedlo.
Day 4: the Čierny Hron Forest Railway
- Main goal: the little train from Čierny Balog to the Vydrovská valley, or the steam train to Dobroč. In 2026 regular trains ran from 28 February to 15 September, and one route cost an adult €15. Details in the article on the Čierny Hron Forest Railway.
- Optional: the Forestry Open-Air Museum in the Vydrovská valley, which because of forestry work is currently open at weekends and on public holidays.
- Outside the little train’s season: Tarzania (until September) and golf in Tále.
- If it rains: the Hotel Bystrá water world or Caracalla Spa in Brusno.
Day 5: Banská Bystrica on the way home
- Main goal: SNP Square, the Town Castle and the Thurzo-Fugger experience exhibition in the Barbican. The Clock Tower has been closed for renovation since 28 September 2026.
- Optional: in the morning before leaving Bystrianska Cave; on the way, until 31 October, Harmanec Cave beyond the town towards Turčianske Teplice. Both are closed on Monday.
- If it rains: Banská Bystrica is a good choice even in the rain, as most of the programme is under a roof.
A week in summer
| Day | Main goal | Optional | If it rains |

| 1 | Arrival, Hotel Bystrá water world | Bystrianska Cave at 16:00 (June to August) | no change |
| 2 | Chopok by gondola from Krupová | descent via Štefánik Chalet to Trangoška | Bystrianska Cave |
| 3 | Ďumbier from Trangoška | only to the chalet and back | wellness |
| 4 | Čierny Hron Forest Railway | Forestry Open-Air Museum (weekend) | Caracalla Spa Brusno |
| 5 | Tarzania and golf in Tále | public golf training (in 2026 on Tuesday from 16:00) | Bystrianska Cave |

| 7 | Banská Bystrica on the way home | Harmanec Cave | Caracalla Spa Brusno |
You have to book the Cave of Dead Bats by phone in advance. It is about 90 minutes on foot to the entrance, and the tour is for children from age 8. In July and August it is open every day except Monday, otherwise from March to December at weekends only.
Chopok South for a weekend in winter
- Day 1: arrival. In the afternoon the water world across the road, or night skiing at Mýto or Tále. In winter 2025/26 Tále had night skiing on Friday from 18:00 to 21:00, and Mýto had night skiing from 18:00 on several days a week. There is no night skiing on the south side of Jasná.
- Day 2: Chopok South. From Krupová by cabins to Kosodrevina and Chopok, from Srdiečko by chairlift. The Jasná ski pass is also valid on the north side, and you can cross over Chopok into Jasná and come back. Buy your ski pass online in advance on Gopass; it is dearer at the ticket desk. We have written up prices, parking and the ski bus in the article Chopok South ski passes.
- Day 3: morning at Mýto or Tále. You check out of the apartments by 10:00 and ski until you drive home. Both resorts are a few minutes from Bystrá and are more pleasant with children than big Chopok.
When it is windy on the ridge, the upper lifts may stop. Then ski lower down around Kosodrevina and Srdiečko, or go to Mýto and Tále.
Chopok South for 5 and 7 days in winter
| Day | Main goal | Optional | When it blows or rains |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrival, wellness or night skiing | wellness | |
| 2 | Chopok South from Krupová | crossing over Chopok to the north | Mýto or Tále |
| 3 | Mýto or Tále, with children the ski school | sledging in Tále | wellness |
| 4 | A day without skis: Banská Bystrica | Caracalla Spa in Brusno on the way back | no change |
| 5 | Chopok South | cross-country skiing in Tále with enough snow | Bystrianska Cave (from 2 January) |
| 6 | Chopok South and north over the ridge | wellness in the evening | Caracalla Spa in Brusno |
| 7 | Morning at Mýto or Tále, departure |
For 5 days take the first four days and ski on the fifth in the morning before leaving. Bystrianska Cave is closed in November and December, so over Christmas the substitute is wellness or Brusno. In winter 2025/26 a multi-day Jasná ski pass could be exchanged for one day’s entry to Tatralandia or Bešeňová in Liptov; the road there leads over Čertovica.
Cross-country trails on the golf course in Tále are groomed only when there is enough natural snow. For ski touring go only with avalanche equipment and after reading the avalanche forecast of the Mountain Rescue Service at laviny.sk. In an emergency call the HZS on 18 300.
When it rains: a swap programme
- The Hotel Bystrá water world across the road, all year, from 11:00 on Monday and otherwise from 10:00 to 21:30. More in the article on the Hotel Bystrá water world.
- Bystrianska Cave, Tuesday to Sunday from 2 January to 31 October.
- Caracalla Spa at Brusno spa, all year including Monday. A comparison with other options is in the article Brusno spa.
- Banská Bystrica with museums and the gallery Tuesday to Sunday, and the Thurzo-Fugger experience exhibition on Monday too.
With children
With small children plan one programme for the morning and rest or water in the afternoon. Children under 6 ride the gondola from Krupová free with a paying adult, Bystrianska Cave has only 26 steps, and the ski schools in Mýto and Tále take children from 4 years. Tips by age are in the article Chopok South with kids.
What to combine it with
Treat the plan as a skeleton and shuffle the days according to the forecast: a clear day for the ridge, a rainy one for underground, water or the town. Bosorka Apartments are two, each for 2 to 6 people, with a ski room and a garden with a gazebo and a stone grill. You can check a free date through the contact and booking page.
