What the public can use at Brusno spa

Brusno spa lies on the northern slopes of Veper, at the mouth of the Peklo valley between Brezno and Banská Bystrica, at an altitude of 424 m. The spa house was completed here in 1837, and the first season began in spring 1838. Because their waters are similar in composition to those of Karlovy Vary, in the 1920s the spa was called the Slovak Karlovy Vary. Today it is run by the company KB SPA s.r.o., and both treatment and accommodation are in the Poľana Spa Hotel and the neighbouring Brusnianka spa house.

If you are not going to Brusno for a treatment stay, you mostly come for the Roman-style Caracalla Spa. It is part of the Poľana Spa Hotel and has its own price list for the public. The spa also sells individual treatments and massages. Accommodated clients have free entry to the pool in the hotel that is used for rehabilitation, during set hours.

Caracalla Spa: pools and saunas

Caracalla Spa is a complex in the style of Roman baths, covering 3,300 m² with a capacity of 250 people. The pools total 770 m².

The pool world has:

  • a 25 m pool for fitness swimming,
  • a seated pool with massage jets,
  • an adventure pool with water spouts, bubble jets and a water mushroom,
  • a wild river with a swing bay,
  • a children’s pool with attractions and an indoor playground.

The sauna world has 8 themed saunas, a Turkish hammam, a tepidarium with a green wall, a Kneipp path, a cooling pool, a relaxation pool and a whirlpool. Only people aged 15 and over may enter.

Unlike a hotel wellness area, this is a full pool world where you can really swim. There are no water slides or outdoor pools here, though; for those you need to go to an aqua park.

Admission and opening hours

The price list is valid from 3 March 2026 until a new one is issued.

There are two ways into the sauna world: a 2-hour package for both the pool and sauna world costs €29, and with an all-day pool ticket the saunas are a €17.50 supplement. A sheet is included.

It may also close for a whole day in exceptional cases, for example on 23 September 2026 because of a power cut. Check the news on kupelebrusno.sk before you set out.

Entry for spa guests and day visitors

Guests staying at Brusno spa get 20% off admission to Caracalla Spa on showing their hotel card. The discount applies to the basic adult admission, not to hourly entries and packages. Some stays for self-paying guests include entries, for example a weekend stay with one 3-hour and one 1-hour entry to the pool world. Accommodated guests also have free entry to the rehabilitation pool in the hotel, with water at 32.5 °C, during the hours of free entry.

Day visitors pay the full admission from the table above. Residents of Brusno with permanent residence also get 20% off on working days.

Treatments and massages without a stay

The spa also sells individually the treatments that do not need a doctor’s consultation. By the price list valid from 23 December 2025, for example, a mineral bath with a wrap costs €18, an underwater massage with a wrap €20, a dry carbon dioxide bath €20 and a classic full-body massage €40. Treatments are sold while capacity lasts. You book them at the reception of the Poľana Spa Hotel (rezervacie@kupelebrusno.sk), and on working days also with the head nurse. You can pay in cash or by card, and accommodated clients get 10% off.

Arrive for a treatment at least 5 minutes early; missed treatments are not made up.

The springs: carbonated mineral water, not thermal

Brusno is not a thermal spa. Seven mineral springs rise in the spa park and four are used: Ondrej, Ludvig, Paula and Ďumbier. All are cold, slightly acidic, carbonated and with an increased content of calcium and magnesium. They are used for drinking cures and mineral baths. The Ondrej spring is bottled under the name Brusnianka. In 1885 the then owner, Ľudovít Rosenauer, tried to drill for a warm spring here but did not succeed.

The spa does not describe the Caracalla Spa water as thermal, and the Brusno springs are cold. If you are looking for warm mineral water, see the next section.

Other thermal pools and wellness nearby

The Hotel Bystrá wellness is the nearest, in the village of Bystrá across the road from the Bosorka apartment. It is smaller, with a large pool, whirlpools and four saunas. Entry for 2 hours costs €20, or €26 with saunas. We have described it in detail in a separate article.

The thermal outdoor pool at Sliač Spa is open in summer only. In 2026 the season began on 1 June and has already ended. The spa describes it as a flow-through pool 1.8 m deep, through which water constantly flows and is completely replaced within 24 hours; iron gives it a brownish colour. All-day entry in 2026 cost an adult €11, from 1 September €10, and 3 hours €5.50. The spa offers indoor treatments, a sauna and pools to the public only in limited hours, and as of 2 October 2026 the treatments were not available to the public. Outside summer we therefore do not recommend Sliač for swimming.

Year-round aqua parks with thermal water are in Liptov, over the Čertovica pass. More about them is on the Rainy day ideas page.

Getting there from Bystrá

From Bystrá you drive to Brezno and on along road no. 66 towards Banská Bystrica. After Brezno you turn off at the sign “BRUSNO - KÚPELE”, drive down into the village and continue on the main road to the spa. The distance and time are in the box above. You park right in front of the Poľana Spa Hotel, and parking is free.

Without a car you can get to Brusno by train or bus. From the station or from the stop on road 66 the spa will drive you for €4 per person if you arrange the transfer at least a day ahead.

What to bring

  • Swimwear and flip-flops; you can buy slippers on site for €3.
  • Your own towel and bathrobe; hiring costs €5 and €10.
  • Swim nappies for small children; they are compulsory in the pools.
  • ID if you want the concession or children’s admission (identity card, health insurance card, ISIC).
  • Nothing made of glass. Glass, sharp objects and food by the pools and in the saunas are forbidden, and so is entry with animals.

What to combine it with

Brusno is about 20 km from Banská Bystrica, so it combines well with a visit to the town. Spend the morning on the square and in the museums and warm up in Caracalla Spa in the afternoon. On a rainy day it is a plan that no weather can spoil.
